Our Mission The mission of The Girls’ Education Project is to provide assistance and support for success to young women, through leadership programming, community mentoring, enhanced education, stimulating experiences, and unhindered access to beneficial persons, opportunities, and resources. Some things we know Education is the single most potent facilitator of economic and social success, and the strongest defense against certain types of criminal behavior. Educated girls grow up to become educated women, who are the single most reliable predictor of the success of their children regarding education, risk-taking behaviors, and potential delinquency. Children raised in poverty and by uneducated mothers, are significantly more likely to drop out of school, to end up as wards of the state, in the care of Child Protective Services, and as statistics in the Juvenile Corrections, and later Adult, Penal systems. Girls who drop out of school are significantly more likely to become pregnant, to remain in abusive relationships, and to raise uneducated children. Studies consistently show that girls with single gender school education significantly outdistance their peers in co-ed schools, and that, on average, 85% of them go on to graduate from college. After-school activities and mentoring programs specifically targeting girls have proven to help significantly in every single one of these areas. There is a severe dearth of opportunities for girls in Arizona with regard to single gender education, both academic and formal, and otherwise. |
