| The Girls’ Education Project offers learning programs designed to educate, support, encourage, and empower girls and young women. We are committed to motivating girls to consistently make appropriate and positive life-choices and direct themselves toward success in all areas of their lives. Many of the girls we serve have been hurt, abused, or neglected and know little of life other than pain, violence, and poverty. We help our girls get to know something better, brighter, happier. We work in family homes, group homes, foster homes, schools, churches, community centers, juvenile corrections centers, juvenile probation, youth groups, shelters, the streets, wherever girls live and learn. We support and encourage, hold girls responsible without blame, coach them forward without avoiding or remaining stuck in the past, and we acknowledge breakdowns as being steps toward powerful and life-changing breakthroughs. The Girls’ Education Project is committed to empowering girls and strengthening them into making the choices that will have them heal themselves and live up to their potential. We neither cast judgment nor enforce punishment. We simply show girls all the options available to them, assist them in discovering and accessing those that interest them, and lead them to recognising value in themselves so that they will begin to consistently make choices that move them forward, safeguard their families, and support their communities. Our programs assist girls in working through issues as fun, and fundamental, as finding a personal fashion image statement and developing constructive hobbies and leisure-time activities, as serious and difficult as keeping safe in the face of relationship violence and other forms of abuse, and as long-ranging as deciding on, and preparing for, a career or profession. We share strategies for staying healthy and for succeeding in school, in their social lives, and at work. We review and upgrade communication skills, and find ways of having girls choose to be in contribution to others. We wrestle with issues of body image and women’ s health, intellectual and academic potential, peer pressure and addictions, diversity and cultural issues, and the nitty-gritties of living in a fast-paced, technologically-driven world. |
